Dominant Freshmen Performances Lead Spiders To 5-2 Win

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va.-  Behind the dominant singles performances of Katya Salas, Emily Gitman, and Anna Abadias the Spiders defeated conference rival George Washington 5-2 on Saturday in Richmond.

"I was really happy we won got the win," said Gitman. "Everyone fought so hard today, and it paid off in the end."

 Richmond started off the day sweeping the doubles point. Freshman power duo Gitman and Abadias paired up at the no. 3 position, winning 8-2 to start the Spider sweep.   Salas and Melissa Kandinata won the no. 1 slot 8-6, while veterans Elizabeth Sims and Alex Smyth came from behind to win 9-8 at the no. 2 spot.

Building off the momentum from the doubles point, Elizabeth Sims won 7-5, 6-2 to kick off singles play. 

 George Washington bounced back winning the next two points at the No. 1 and No. 6 positions to tie up the score 2-2

 Gitman won her point 6-2, 6-4 at the no. 5 position to give the Spiders a 3-2 edge over the Colonials.  Fellow freshman Salas sealed the Spider victory with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Mimi Hamling.

 Abadias closed out the day for the Spiders, picking up a 5-7, 7-6, 10-5 win.

 Richmond is now 4-10 on the season and 3-0 in conference action.

 The Spiders are scheduled to play Binghamton at 10 a.m. on Sunday at the Westhampton Tennis Courts.
