UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va.- The Spider women’s tennis team swept the Binghamton Bearcats 5-0 on a chilly Wednesday at the University of Richmond.
“I am very happy with our fight today in some tough weather,” said head coach Mark Wesselink.
Richmond started out the day convincingly winning the doubles point. Melissa Kandinata and Katya Salas paired up at the no. 1 position for their second straight win with an impressive 8-1 score.
The freshman duo of Anna Abadias and Emily Gitman paired won at the No. 3 position to secure the doubles point for the Spiders.
In singles play, Alex Smyth blanked her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 position. Emily Gitman played her way to a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 5 position.
For the second match in a row Katya Salas secured the match point with a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win over Shea Brodsky at the No. 4 position.
Melissa Kandinata finished her match with a 6-1, 6-3 win at the No. 1 slot to close out the day.
“Everyone is picking it up and just in time as JMU is strong this year. They will test us tomorrow,” said Wesselink.
The Spiders are now 5-10 on the season and are scheduled to play JMU in Harrisonburg Thursday.
