Spiders Triumph Over Butler In First Round of A-10s

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The Spider women’s team picked up a huge 4-0 win over Butler in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Championships in Charlottesville, Va. on Thursday.

In doubles action,  Anna Abadias and Emily Gitman won 8-4 at the No. 3 position to pick up their eighth consecutive win of the season.   Butler struck back with an 8-6 win over Melissa Kandinata and Katya Salas at the No. 1 spot to tie up the doubles point 1-1. 

The point rested on the backs of Elizabeth Sims and Alex Smyth. The duo fought back and fourth at the No. 2 position to prevail with a 9-8 win, clinching the doubles point for the Spiders.

The momentum from the doubles point spilled over to singles action.  Gitman breezed past her opponent with a quick 6-1 , 6-1 win to pick up the Spiders first singles point. 

Salas earned a 6-2 win in the first set of the No. 4 position and then finished off her opponent 6-0 in the second set for the point.

Smyth sealed the match with a  6-1, 6-2 victory at the No. 5 position.

The Spiders will play Charlotte tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the Boars Head Inn.
