UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Head women’s swimming and diving coach Matt Barany announced the hiring of Sean Letsinger as head diving coach Wednesday. In addition to his coaching endeavors at the University of Richmond, Letsinger will be head diving coach for Capitol Dive Club.

“I think Sean is going to merge into our program quickly,” said Barany. “Erika Matheis worked hard to leave the program in great condition and I expect Sean to start running with it immediately. He has energy and a great sense of humor. Now, it’s his turn to make an impact.”

“I am excited to be a part of the UR family,” said Letsinger. “I look forward to working alongside Matt and the staff to lead this group of young women to excellence.”

“There is such a strong sense of community at UR, and it is hard not to want to be a part of it. Everyone is so welcoming and accepting of people from all walks of life. It is truly amazing,” said Letsinger.

“In addition to the location, I found myself captivated by the tradition of athletic and academic success, the exceptional leadership of the staff, the desire of the student athletes, and the positive reputation of the university,” said Letsinger.

Letsinger spent the 2012–2013 season as the men’s and women’s diving coach at South Dakota State University. In his short time there, he led his divers to 22 individual personal best performances, 18 individual wins, and 7 new school records. Letsinger also led two divers to the NCAA Zone D Championships. During his yearlong stint at SDSU, both the men’s and women’s teams earned the highest team grade point averages in program history. The men’s team earned a 3.116, and the women’s team earned a 3.500 in the spring 2013 semester.

A native of Knoxville, TN, Letsinger was a letterman diver at the University of Tennessee from 2007–2010. He was awarded the first ever Inspiration Award at the 2010 Volscars in honor of his perseverance through extreme personal obstacles.  During the following two seasons, he went on to become the student assistant diving coach at UT and assisted head coach, Dave Parrington, in leading his divers to multiple top finishes in the 2012 SEC Championships.

Letsinger held the assistant diving coach position for Tennessee Diving for eight years (2004–2012). During his time with Tennessee Diving, he assisted in coaching multiple city, state, regional, zone, and national finalists and champions.

Additionally, Letsinger served as the head diving coach for Knoxville Catholic High School for four years (2008–2012). During his time coaching at KCHS, his divers consistently finished in the top eight in all major high school championships.

Prior to college, Letsinger qualified and competed in 14 USA Junior Olympic Nationals, one USA Diving Junior Olympic World Trials (2002), two USA vs. Canada Junior Challenges (2002, 2003), and one Junior Olympic Pan-American Games (2003).
