RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond women’s tennis team downed the Villanova Wildcats, 5-2, at the Country Club of Virginia Friday evening to capture its first win of the season.
The Spiders set the tone early, sweeping the doubles portion. Melissa Kandinata and Brittany Boys defeated Mikelle Mancini and Conner Brewer, 8-3, while Elizabeth Sims and Denny Lamachia took down Samantha Schafer and Linley Busby, 8-4. Kelsey Williams and Georgina Pons Cano picked up the final match, defeating Kate Pettee and Hayley Sanzone, 8-6, to complete the sweep.
“I am very pleased with doubles play today,” commented head coach Mark Wesselink. “After a tough opening weekend, the girls came out strong today and played their best tennis yet.”
Up 1-0, Richmond picked up single wins at the No. 2, 3, 4 and 6 spots to secure the victory. Anna Abadias Morales edged Schafer, 6-4, 7-5, on court two, while Sims defeated Busby, 6-1, 6-2, on court three.
Katya Salas and Williams picked up the final points for the Spiders. Salas easily defeated Brewer, 6-3, 6-1, on court four, while Williams blanked Sanzone on court six, 6-0, 6-0.
The Spiders will be back in action Saturday, Feb. 1 when they take on Longwood at the Rain Tree Racquet Club at 2:30 p.m.
