NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Freshman Jacob Dunbar of the Richmond men’s tennis team was named Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Week, announced by the conference office Tuesday afternoon.
"It’s nice to see our student-athletes getting the recognition that they deserve,“ commented Richmond head coach Ben Johnson. “Jacob has worked very hard this season and it has definitely showed through his performance. His 19-match win streak is very impressive and this honor is definitely well-deserved."
Playing a court down from his nationally ranked older brother, Jacob Dunbar is having an impressive freshman campaign as he holds a 26-4 mark this year, including a 19-1 spring record.
This week, Dunbar stretched his singles win streak to 19 with a pair of No. 2 singles victories against East Carolina and No. 53 George Washington. Against ECU’s Mario Martinez, the Medina, Ohio, product dropped just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win.
Dunbar then defeated the 76th ranked pair of Francisco Dias and Julius Tverijonas of GW in No. 1 doubles, 8-5, before picking up the Spiders lone point against Nikita Fomin in a three-set battle 7-6(9-7), 2-6, 10-4.
The Richmond men’s tennis team will be in action Thursday, April 10 at conference foe George Mason at 3 p.m.
