UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team fell to the VCU Rams on Saturday afternoon, 5-1, at Pitt Field.
With the loss, Richmond falls to 14-18-1 on the season overall and to 5-6 in Atlantic 10 conference play. VCU improves to 25-7 on the year and to 7-2 in league action.
LHP Zak Sterling(3-2) took the hard-luck loss for the Spiders, tossing 6.2 strong innings. Sterling allowed five runs, but three unearned runs crossed the plate in the VCU sixth inning. The loss is only the fourth in 38 career appearances for Sterling.
Trailing 5-1 in the bottom of the ninth, the Spiders were able to bring the game-tying run to home plate with one out after an error and two singles. The rally ended there, however, as a strikeout and fly out ended the threat.
The Richmond Spiders will wrap up their three-game, A-10 series with VCU on Sunday at Pitt Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
