UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond women’s tennis team shut out the Norfolk State Spartans, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at the Westhampton College Tennis Courts in its fourth match this week.

“It felt good to get back on track today,” commented Richmond head coach Mark Wesselink. “We have taken some tough losses lately, so we needed a win for our confidence and to get some momentum going for the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships.”

The Spiders raced out to a strong start, securing the doubles point with three-straight Richmond wins in the first portion of the day. The Spartans took seven combined games from the Spiders in the doubles portion.

In singles action, Richmond continued with the momentum and took the first five singles matches with straight sets. Playing on court four, Melissa Kandinata highlighted the day with an impressive 6-0, 6-1 win.

Court five was they only match to end in a tiebreaker. Katya Salas fell behind in the first set but rallied back to capture a 4-6, 6-0 (5) victory to secure the shutout.

“We have UMBC coming up Friday and I hope we can perform as well as we did today. If we play at this level we will do well at A-10s,” added Wesselink.

The Spiders will enjoy a six-day break before hosting UMBC Friday, April 18 at 2:30 p.m. for their final regular season matchup.
