It was a winning fall in the classroom for Spider student-athletes. Figures released by the Richmond athletic department show the overall grade point average for Spider athletic teams for the fall semester at 3.12. Twelve of Richmond's 15 teams acheived a GPA of 3.00 or better.
The statistics also show six sports scored their highest semester GPA on record or acheived their highest fall GPA on record.
"We are incredibly proud of our student-athletes and their accomplishments in the classroom," said Bruce Matthews, Assistant Athletic Director for Academics. "Beyond our overall statistics – nearly 60 percent of our student-athletes have a 3.00 GPA and 40 percent of our teams established academic records – we are most impressed by our student-athletes’ individual efforts, sacrifices, and sweat behind these numbers.”
Additionally, more than half of the student-athletes have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better and almost 20 percent made the Dean’s List (3.60 or better), with seven student-athletes earning a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Matthews also earned accolades, recently honored as the recipient of the 2014 International Education Award presented to a staff member.
