BALTIMORE – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team defeated the Coppin State Eagle in Baltimore, Md. on Tuesday afternoon. 7-3.
With the road victory, Richmond improves to 20-24-1 on the season overall, while Coppin State falls to 11-32 on the year.
Sophomore 1B Doug Kraeger led the offensive charge for Richmond on Tuesday, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI. Freshman DH Kurtis Brown had three hits and drove in a run, while sophomore OF Jansen Fraser had hit, a RBI and two runs scored.
Out of the bullpen, junior RHP Ray Harron (3-2) pitched the final 4.2 innings to earn the win, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out six.
Tied 1-1 after four innings, the Spiders scored a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. In the frame, Fraser had a RBI double, while Kraeger plated the other run with a single through the left side of the infield.
Leading 3-2 in the top of the seventh, Kraeger struck again for the Spiders, plating the team’s fourth run with a one-out double to left center.
In the top of the ninth inning, Richmond added three runs with two outs. After Kraeger’s second RBI double of the game, the Spiders added another on a Coppin State error. Brown finished the Richmond scoring with a RBI single, giving UR a 7-2 advantage.
In the bottom of the frame, the Eagles scored once, but couldn’t muster any more, as the Spiders prevailed on the road, 7-3.
The Richmond Spiders baseball team will be back in action on Wednesday when the team heads south to face ACC power NC State. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
