OMAHA, Neb. – University of Richmond Spiders 3B Matt Dacey put on a show at TD Ameritrade Park on Thursday night, placing third at the TD Ameritrade College Home Run Derby.
In the first round, Dacey sat just outside the top-four with three points with one swing left. On the money ball pitch, which is worth two points, Dacey crushed a homer to right field to advance to the semifinals.
In the semifinals, Dacey needed 11 home runs to move on the championship. Undaunted, the rising junior hit nine blasts – including a derby-long 480’ shot – to finish just shy of the top-two with nine points.

RELEASE ON DACEY’S SELECTION TO THE HOME RUN DERBY
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond Spiders baseball player Matt Dacey has been selected to participate in the 5th Annual TD Ameritrade College Home Run Derby at TD Ameritrade Park on July 3.
Dacey, along with seven other players from across the country will participate in the Home Run Derby that will air live on ESPN at 8:30 p.m. ET. Last year, over 23,000 fans filled TD Ameritrade Park, the home of the NCAA College World Series. Richmond assistant coach Matt Tyner will be throwing to Dacey in the competition.
“We couldn’t be more excited for Matt to participate in the College Home Run Derby,” Richmond head coach Tracy Woodson said. “Matt had a great season for us and has continued that this summer. It’s not only great for Matt to be participating, but also for the Spider Baseball program”
The College Home Run Derby includes three rounds of play: Round 1 featuring all contestants, Round 2 featuring the hitters with the top four scores after Round 1, and Round 3 featuring the top two sluggers after Round 2.
In each round, contestants will attempt to hit as many home runs as they can before logging 10 outs, or hits that do not result in a home run. Balls reaching the warning track will not count as an out, giving players another opportunity at bat.
Additionally, following the tenth and final out of each at bat, contestants will have an opportunity to hit a home run with the ‘Bonus Ball.’ If successful, the special ball will tack two additional home runs onto the contestant’s total score.
“When Coach Woodson called me and told me that I'd been selected I was speechless,” Dacey remarked. “Representing Richmond baseball on a national scale is going to be a huge honor and I'm incredibly humbled to be recognized as a participant in the TD Ameritrade College Home Run Derby. I'm beyond excited for this opportunity and I can't wait to compete in Omaha.”
After transferring from the University of Michigan, Dacey made an immediate impact in the middle of Richmond’s order. The Wyckoff, N.J. native led the Atlantic 10 in home runs with 12 – five more than any other player. Dacey also led the Spiders and ranked third in the league with 46 RBI. On the year, Dacey hit .265 with eight doubles and a triple, scoring 37 runs.
