UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Head Coach Dan Chemotti has always talked about challenging his student-athletes at the highest level both on and off the field during their time with the University of Richmond men’s lacrosse program.
That challenge on the field is clear. In 2017, the Spiders will take on four of the past five national champions and six NCAA Tournament teams from last year.
“We want to give our student-athletes the opportunity to compete against the best in the country and I believe this schedule does exactly that,” Chemotti said. “Our guys will be put the test every time they step on the field this spring and that’s exactly what we want.”
The Spiders will open with exhibition games against Navy and Loyola, two teams that both reached the quarterfinals of the 2016 NCAA Tournaments.
Richmond will officially open its 2017 campaign when they host perennial NCAA Tournament contenders Fairfield (Feb. 11) and UMBC (Feb. 18) at Robins Stadium.
After a road game at Mount St. Mary’s, the Spiders return home for a tough three-game stretch, which includes two NCAA Tournament teams in Marquette (Feb. 25) and Duke (March 5). The Spiders’ SoCon opener will wrap up the home stand with battle against in-state foe VMI on March 11.
Richmond will battle the defending national champions North Carolina on March 13 in Chapel Hill, before diving back into SoCon play with trips to Jacksonville (March 18) and High Point (March 25).
2011 National Champion Virginia will once again visit the Capital City for an April 1matchup against the Spiders.
Home games against Mercer (April 8) and Furman (April 29), along with road trips to Bellarmine (April 15) and reigning conference champion Air Force (April 22) wrap up the Spiders’ regular season slate.
Richmond will host the SoCon Tournament for the third straight year with the semifinals set for May 6 and the finals on May 8.
