UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women’s tennis team doesn’t return to action until January, but the team has had an exciting week with the signing of future Spider Emily Dunbar.
A native of Medina, Ohio, Dunbar signed her National Letter of Intent to play for the Spiders beginning in the 2017-18 season. Dunbar has a 5-star rating, making her one of the top recruits in Spider women’s tennis history.
“Emily's 5-star rating says it all,” head coach Mark Wesselink said. “I've watched her play against the best players in the country at all the national tournaments, and seen that she has all-court skills and a will to compete and win.”
Dunbar will be the third Spider tennis player in her family. Her brother Ethan graduated in 2015 after a successful career on the Spider men’s team, while her brother Jacob is currently a senior on the team and has had one of the most successful careers in program history.
Along with her 5-star rating, Dunbar boasts a Universal Tennis Rating of 11, and has had a national tennis recruiting ranking as high as No. 29.
“With her experience and talent, she is going to help take us to the next level,” Wesselink said. “She will make an impact for our team, just as her brothers have done for our men's team.”
