UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – With five of its top six goal scorers returning from a season which included 11 wins, a top-20 ranking and another trip to the conference championship game, expectations are high for the University of Richmond men’s lacrosse entering the spring of 2017.
Entering their fourth year of existence, the Spiders have accomplished another first as they will enter the season with their first-ever preseason ranking, sitting at #15 in the InsideLacrosse preseason poll.
This marks the third year in the program’s four-year history that Richmond has earned a national ranking.
Six of the Spiders that earned All-SoCon accolades last spring return led by first team honoree and team captain Brendan Hynes, who leads a stifling defensive unit that was the backbone for much of Richmond’s success last year.
Hynes led a defense that led the country in caused turnovers per game with nearly 11, while also ranking third in the nation, allowing just 7.44 goals per outing.
Offensively, sophomore Teddy Hatfield returns after leading the team in goals (20) and points (36), while Dan Ginestro (19) and Mitch Goldberg (19) also will be back in action for the Spiders. Goldberg suffered a season-ending injury that limited him to just 10 games last spring.
Richmond opens up the 2017 season with five of its first six games at home, including the season-opener against perennial NCAA Tournament contender Fairfield on Saturday, Feb. 11. Game time at Robins Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
