UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Losing an All-American at the running back position is never easy. Losing two of your top running backs in the first half of the season makes that even more difficult.
Deontez Thompson made that transition much easier for the Richmond Spiders, rushing for over 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns this past fall. His effort helped him earn Freshman All-American honors from HERO Sports.
“I’m humbled by the honor and really it’s a credit to the line for opening up holes and my teammates for instilling their belief in me all season long,” Thompson said.
On the year, Thompson finished with 1,250 total yards and 11 total touchdowns. He became the first freshman in program history to rush for over 1,000 yards and just the 13th player ever to reach 1,000 rushing yards in a single season.
His nine rushing touchdowns are the 12th-most in a single season in program history.
Thompson and the Spiders will get back to work this spring under new head coach Russ Huesman.
