UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The last time the University of Richmond men’s basketball team started 4-0 in conference play, no members of the current Spiders team were even born yet.
The current Spiders (10-6, 4-0 A-10) matched that feat on Thursday night with a convincing 78-61 win over the reigning co-regular season Atlantic 10 Champion St. Bonaventure (10-6, 2-2 A-10).
The freshmen duo of De'Monte Buckingham and Nick Sherod combined for 35 points on 10-of-21 shooting, eight of which were three-pointers. Buckingham led the way with his first career double-double, leading all scorers with 18 points and grabbing 13 rebounds on the night.
Richmond’s defense was really the story of the game, holding the Bonnies, who entered the game averaging over 82 points a game, to just 61 on the night. The Spiders limited SBU to just 31-percent from long range and forced 14 turnovers, while winning the rebounding battle, 33-32.
Buckingham got things started right from the tip, knocking down a three-pointer on the game’s first possession and helping Richmond jump out to a 5-0 lead in the first minute of the contest.
Matt Mobley and SBU wouldn’t go away easily though, responding with a 22-6 run to take a double-digit lead with under 10 minutes to play in the first half.
Buckingham and Sherod would ignite a late first half run (11-2) for Richmond that got the Spiders within 30-27 at the break.
Cline, who dealt with foul trouble for much of the first half, scored eight of Richmond’s first 11 points of the second half as the Spiders ran off 19-9 spurt to grab a 46-39 lead, a lead they would never relinquish.
SBU would get within three, but Sherod would come alive, connecting on three three-pointers in a two-minute span to push Richmond’s lead into double-figures, where it remained for the rest of the contest.
Richmond returns to action on Saturday when they hit the road to take on Saint Joseph’s in a nationally-televised contest. Game time is set for 12:30 p.m. on NBC Sports Network.
