NEWPORT NEWS, Va – The University of Richmond women’s track & field team had another opportunity to put on a show at the CNU Captains Classic on Saturday and many of the runners did just that. The Spiders collected 11 more top 10 finishes at the event with just a couple weeks left before the Atlantic 10 Championships at the beginning of May.

The bread and butter of the Richmond track team has been the 1500m run all season long and there was no changing that on Saturday afternoon. The top runners in the program all took the track and this time it was Marisa Ruskan that put on a show. She shattered the track record for this event, picking up the win in 4:23.85, holding off the hard charging, previous record holder, Regan Rome of William & Mary who finished just .04 seconds behind Ruskan. Shelby Cain finished third in 4:29.93, Colleen Carney was fifth in 4:35.75 and Haley Preschutti (4:35.79) was sixth to round out the group of top 10 finishers for the Spiders.

The star power of freshman Claire Brown was on display again this weekend, this time on the outdoor track where she captured the win in the 800m run with a time of 2:13.80. Stephanie Hughes followed closely behind in third in 2:15.87 and Stacey Dec did well to finish 12th with a time of 2:37.71.

When it came to be sprint time, freshman Morgan Towe battled her way to a ninth-place finish in the 100m dash, clocking in a time of 12.76 seconds. It was the 200m where most of the Spider sprinters appeared however. Mary Allen cruised to a fourth-overall finish, second among Division I opponents with a time of 25.44, Gabby Bowen (27.16) finished 20th, Chloe Smith (27.20) was 21st and Marshea Robinson (27.52) checked in in the 24th position. Smith was on the track again for the 400m dash and finished 16th overall with a time of 1:03.03.

The Spiders gathered two relays teams to compete on Saturday. The 4x400m team comprised of Maria Acosta, Mary Allen, Amanda Corbosiero and Morgan Towe clocked in a time of 3:57.03, good enough to finish second overall. In the 4x100m the team of Allen, Towe, Robinson and Bowen finished fourth overall with a time of 49.45.

Kylie Regan continued her quality spring season after a successful fall with a third place finish in the 3000m run, finishing in 10:12.85.
