UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The 2017 Richmond football season was already fast approaching and now it's coming even sooner. ESPN announced on Wednesday that the Spider season-opener at Sam Houston State would move to Sunday, Aug. 27 and air on ESPNU at 7 p.m. EST.

Richmond and SHSU are two of only three programs in the country to reach the FCS quarterfinals in 2015 and 2016. August's tilt will be the first ever meeting between these two extremely successful programs and Bearkats are one of seven teams on the Spiders' 2017 schedule that received a national ranking in 2016.

The Spiders last played a game on ESPNU to kick off the 2015 season at Maryland and have appeared on the ESPN family of networks seven times since.

Sam Houston State posted a 12-1 record last season with an undefeated, 9-0, mark in the Southland Conference. The team was never ranked lower than third at any point in the season and entered the FCS Playoffs as the No. 1 team in the country before falling to JMU in the quarterfinals.
