Defense Strong In 48-24 Spring Game Victory

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders football team closed out the spring portion of its 2013 season with its annual Spring Game at Robins Stadium on Saturday afternoon.  The Spider defense claimed victory, beating the offense, 48-24.

After a tight first quarter that ended with the score tied at 5-5, the defense controlled the second quarter to take a 25-11 lead in to the halftime break.

In the first half, rising redshirt freshman DB David Jones was terrific, recording an interception to go with three tackles and a QB hurry.  Rising senior LB Walt Sparks had six tackles in the opening half, while rising redshirt senior DL Kerry Wynn had a tackle for loss, a QB hurry and a pass breakup.

For the offense in the opening half, rising senior WR Ben Edwards had four receptions for 90 yards, while rising redshirt junior WR Stephen Barnette had three catches for 27 yards.  Rising redshirt junior QB Michael Strauss completed 9-of-17 passes in the first half for 130 yards.

In the second half, the Spider defense continued to play well, pulling away from the offense to win the 2013 Spider Football Spring Game, 48-24.

On the day, Jones finished with eight tackles, an interception and a tackle for loss, while rising redshirt freshman LB Omar Howard had seven stops with an interception.  Rising redshirst junior Sean Ryan totaled eight stops in the win for the defense.

For the offense, Strauss completed 18-of-32 passes for 198 yards, while rising redshirt junior QB Montel White completed 7-of-16 of his attempts for  68 yards.

Rising sophomore RB Jacobi Green had eight carries for team-high 37 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown run in the second half.  Rising redshirt freshman T.J. Moon ended the day with 11 carries for 30 yards.

For the receivers, Edwards was spectacular, totaling nine receptions for a team-high 130 yards.  Barnette ended the day with four catches for 38 yards, while rising redshirt freshman WR Josh Murray had four receptions for 38 yards.

During halftime of Saturday's game, Richmond head coach Danny Rocco handed out the Spring Awards. Edwards and rising redshirt senior DL Jacob Pierce received the Weight Room Champion Award, while rising redshirt junior OL Chad Kolumber was named Most Improved Offensive Player and rising junior DL Adam Farley was honored as the Most Improved Defensive Player.

Also at halftime, Rocco named four captains for the 2013 season.  Rising junior OL Austin Gund was named captain for the second-straight season.  Also being named as captains were Edwards, Pierce and Wynn, with additional team captains set to be named at the conclusion of summer practices.
