RICHMOND, Va. – After helping the University of Richmond Spiders football team defeat the Liberty Flames, 30-21, on Saturday, DB Wayne Pettus was named the CAA Special Teams Player of the Week.
Pettus had a tremendous game for the Spiders, blocking a pair of field goal attempts, while also tallying an interception. Pettus also tallied four tackles and a pair of pass breakups in Richmond’s win over the Flames.
“Wayne is really putting together a great season,” commented head coach Danny Rocco. “He was certainly a big difference in the game here Saturday night against Liberty. He has really been in a great position all year long and I think that any time you have a defensive player touching the ball five times in a game really demonstrates how active he was.”
With Liberty looking to close the game to 30-24 in the third quarter, Pettus came up with a huge block to thwart the field goal attempt, maintaining the momentum for the Spiders. On Liberty’s next possession, Pettus again came through, blocking another field goal attempt from the Flames.
The Richmond Spiders will host the Maine Black Bears on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Robins Stadium in the team’s CAA conference opener.
