BALTIMORE, Md. - University of Richmond Spiders redshirt senior linebacker Darius McMillan was selected to the Preseason All-CAA Football Team on Wednesday at the league's annual Media Day at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. The Spiders were picked to finish ninth in the preseason poll released by the conference.
Coming in to the 2012 season, much is expected of McMillan, who was also named Third-Team Preseason All-CAA by College Sports Madness earlier this month. Last season, McMillan was terrific for the Spiders, earning All-America honors and a spot on the All-CAA Second Team.
Starting all 11 games for Richmond, the Hampton, Va., product finished 2011 ranked second in the CAA in tackles with 133 and in tackles per game at 12.1. On the year, McMillan tallied 40 solo stops, including 3.5 for loss and 0.5 sacks.
Towson was tagged as the preseason favorite heading in to the 2012 season, followed by Old Dominion and James Madison. New Hampshire was picked to finish fifth followed by Delaware, Maine, William & Mary, Villanova and Richmond. Rhode Island and Georgia State rounded out the preseason poll.
Richmond opens the 2012 campaign on Saturday, September 1 at the University of Virginia. The Spiders will host Gardner-Webb at Robins Stadium on September 8 in the home opener.
