UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - After months of anticipation, the first day of 2012 Training Camp for the Richmond Spiders football team arrived on Monday afternoon. The team began its training camp with a brisk, two-hour practice at Robins Stadium.
This season, all practices during training camp are open to the public. With practices being held at both Robins Stadium and the Grass Practice Fields on River Road, fans attending practice are asked to remain in the bleachers. In Robins Stadium, fans are asked to sit in the stands on the west side of the stadium.
The first day of practice was productive and long for the Spiders, as the team was busy in meetings before 7 a.m. Along with practice and meetings, equipment was issued and freshmen attended an orientation.
The first practice was highlighted by two 7-on-7 drills, pitting the Spider offense and defense against each other. Working without pads, the practice was a high-speed affair, with the Richmond defense flying around. Junior Wayne Pettus stood out defensively, recording a pair of pass break-ups as well as forcing a fumble.
Offensively, the quarterback trio of John Laub, Michael Strauss and Montel White were sharp, hitting their wide receivers in stride. The biggest play of the afternoon came when White hit redshirt-junior WR Darrian Carmichael for a 20-yard completion down the left hash mark.
The Richmond Spiders football team will back at practice on Tuesday at Robins Stadium from 2:15-4:45 p.m.
