Track & Field Set for Saturday's Tribe Invite

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - After opening the outdoor season a week ago across town at VCU, the Richmond men's and women's track & field squads continue their seasons on Saturday when they travel down I-64 for William and Mary's Tribe Invite in Williamsburg, Va.

Saturday's field events are set to get underway with the women's javelin and women's long jump at 11 a.m. Running events will commence shortly thereafter at 12 p.m. with the men's 3,000 Meter Steeplechase. The meet's running and field events will be held at Zable Stadium, while all throwing events will take place at the Stimson Throwing Area located behind Kaplan Arena.

Joining the Spiders in Williamsburg this weekend will be George Mason, Hampton, Norfolk State, University of DC, VCU and the host Tribe.

Both Spider squads opened their outdoor seasons this past Saturday, March 17 at VCU's Rams Invitational across town at Sport Backers Stadium.

Senior Meaghan McGovern (North Kingston, R.I./North Kingston) provided one definite highlight of the day, winning the hammer throw with a season-best opening toss of 54.51 meters (178'10").

Sophomore Grace Gibson (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) also had a stellar season-opener, tying her own school record with a leap of 3.40 meters (11'2") to place second in the women's pole vault. On the men's side, senior Devin Cassels (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) followed suit with a second-place showing in 4.20 meters (13'9").

Freshman Karissa Jenkins (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) took seventh in the long jump with a leap of 5.23 meters (17'2"), and senior Amanda Caporelli (Churchville, Va./Buffalo Gap) finished closely behind in 11th with a distance of 4.92 (16'2").

In other field action, junior Sarah Nuttycombe (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) placed ninth in the triple jump in 10.33 meters (33'11").

Newcomer Amber Young (Pepper Pike, Ohio/Orange) also scored a top-10 finish at the meet, crossing the line in 1:01.49 to take 10th in the 400 Meters. Sophomore Meaghan Hart (State College, Pa./State College) trailed one spot behind in 11th with a time of 1:01.58.
