Spider Record Falls On Day One Of Fred Hardy

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va.- The Richmond Track & Field team opened the first day of the eighth annual Fred Hardy Invitational with Amber Young breaking a school record and the rest of the team posting strong performances.  The Spiders will hope to take that momentum into Saturday’s second and final day of action at Robins Stadium.

Sophomore Amber Young made the most of her first day on track, breaking the school record in the 400m hurdles.  Young put up an impressive time of 1:03.32 to take seventh overall.   Teammate Amanda Thatcher put up a mark of 1:09.28 and fellow Spider Ann O’Toole finished just behind with a time of 1:09.33.

Stephanie Paradis earned second in the 1500 meter with a time of 4:32.51 while former Spider standout Nicol Traynor took first pacing the field with a 4:27.07 finish. Lydia Morton finished fifth with a time of 4:38.84.   Emily Graber raced her way to a time of 4:55.03.

In the 5000, Molly Parsons ran a highly competitive and tight race to earn second with a 17:46.65 mark.  Parsons helped pace teammate Allie Stapleton. Stapleton finished in seventh with a time of 18:30.50.  Dana Guglielmo rounded out the top 10 with an 18:46.17 finish.

In field events Grace Gibson took fifth in the pole vault with a vault of 3.40m.

Kyle Ragan started off the day for the Spider men in the 3000- meter steeplechase.  Ragan finished the event in sixth place with a time of 10:00.60.

Matthew Groff and Jason Skipper pushed each other in the 1500m to finish fifth and sixth respectively.  Groff clocked in at 3:53.57 to capture fifth place, while Skipper posted a time of 3:54.34 to take sixth.   Justin Keefe crossed the finish line by four-tenths of a second to edge Rutger’s Chris DeFabio to earn eighth (3:56.56).

Saturday’s second and final day of Fred Hardy action begins at 9 a.m. with the men’s discus in the Upper Practice Fields on the Westhampton side of campus along Crenshaw Way behind Parking Lot W39.  Events at Robins Stadium begin at 10 a.m. with the women’s long jump.  Running events are scheduled to start at 11 a.m. with the women’s 100-meter hurdle. Prior to the start of the running events the Spider seniors will be recognized.
