SHORT HOPS
The Richmond baseball team is back in Atlantic 10 action this weekend and kicks off a seven-game road trip with a critical conference series at Duquesne. Friday's series-opener is set for 3 p.m. at Duquesne Field.
The series rolls on Saturday and Sunday -- both at 1 p.m. -- and Gametracker is available at RichmondSpiders.com.
The Spiders enter the series at 7-11 and just three games back of sixth place in the A-10 standings -- the top six qualify for the A-10 Tournament.
Senior RHP Ian Marshall earned his fourth career Atlantic 10 weekly award as the starter was named this week's Pitcher of the Week. Marshall fanned six and scattered five singles over a dominating eight shutout innings in a 7-2 versus second-place Saint Joseph's Friday.
Thanks to Marshall's surge, and five-consecutive wins from junior RHP Matt Trent, the Spiders have posted a 4.83 ERA from their starting pitchers over the last nine A-10 games. Trent picked up his fifth-consecutive victory by firing the final 2.1 innings in Wednesday's comback win over Longwood -- Richmond has won nine games this season in come-from-behind fashion.
Sophomore C/DH Chris Cowell's 15 HRs and 47 RBIs this year career highs, while his nine bombs in A-10 play are a league high (no other player in the league has more than six).
Sophomore SS Adam McConnell clubbed two homers in the Spiders' 13-10 win over Longwood Wednesday and was one of five Spiders to hit the team's six HRs in the two-game series versus the Lancers.
Richmond has already hit 12 more bombs as a team then they did in 2009 (56 in 2010; 44 in 2009).
