UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team recorded its ninth-consecutive victory on Friday afternoon at Pitt Field, defeating the visiting Quinnipiac Bobcats, 3-0.  With the win, the Spiders improve their record on the season to 9-3, while the Bobcats fall to 1-4 on the season.

On the mound, junior Jacob Mayers (3-1) was nearly unhittable for the Spiders in earning his third-straight win.  Mayers tossed eight shutout innings, striking out a career-high nine batters while surrendering just two hits.  In the ninth, sophomore Andrew Brockett nailed down the win, tallying his third save of the year.

Offensively, senior Chris Cowell went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a double, while sophomore Mike Small also had a pair of hits and notched a RBI.  Senior Adam McConnell and sophomore Adam Forrer each had a hit and a run driven in for the Spiders.

The nine-game winning streak for the Spiders is the longest for the team in almost a decade.  During the 2002 campaign, Richmond reeled off 10-straight wins twice dating the season on their way to making a NCAA Super Regional appearance.

The story early in the game was the dominant pitching of Mayers for the Spiders.  The junior out of Mechanicsville, Va., retired the first 11 batters he faced, striking out seven of them.

With Mayers dealing on the mound, the Spider offense got on the board for the first time in the fourth inning.  With two outs, Cowell blasted a 3-2 offering to straightaway center field, easily clearing the fence for a solo home run.  Cowell's seventh homer of the season gave Richmond a 1-0 lead after four frames.

In the fifth inning, Small reached base on a sharply hit single to right-center field with one away.  After a stolen base, passed ball, and a walk to junior Matt Zink, runners were on the corners for McConnell.  On a 1-0 count, McConnell plated Small with a sacrifice fly to center field, making the Richmond advantage 2-0 after six innings.

Three innings later, the Spider played add-on, increasing their lead over the Bobcats.  After reaching on a hit-by-pitch, senior Phil Ruzbarsky moved to third after a stolen base and a fly out.  With two outs and a runner on third, Forrer doubled to right field, easily scoring Ruzbarsky, pushing the Spider advantage to 3-0 headed to the ninth.

In the top of the ninth, Brockett surrendered a double but two nice plays from Small at shortstop and a strikeout insured the shutout and the win for the Spiders, 3-0, over Quinnipiac.

The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team will continue its three-game series with the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Saturday at Pitt Field with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.  Sunday's series finale will start at 1 p.m. at Pitt Field.
