UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team defeated the Temple Owls, 6-1, at Pitt Field on Friday afternoon at Pitt Field.
With the win, the Spiders improve to 27-16 on the season overall and to 10-6 in Atlantic 10 conference play. With the loss, the Owls fall to 17-24 on the year and to 6-13 in league action.
Celebrating his 22nd birthday, junior Mike Small had a great day at the plate, going 1-for-1 with a three-run double, two walks and a run scored. Senior Jacob Mayers and freshman Tyler Beckwith each had two hits and a RBI on the afternoon for Richmond.
Making his first start since March 1, redshirt freshman RHP Jonathan de Marte (4-0) pitched a career-high six innings to earn his fourth win of the season. De Marte allowed just one run on five hits while striking out one. Sophomore LHP Zach Grossfeld tossed the final three innings to earn his first career save, striking out four while allowing just two hits.
After a RBI single from Mayers gave the Spiders a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, the Owls tied the game in the second with a run. In the bottom of the frame, Small cleared the bases with a three-run double down the right field line, giving Richmond a 4-1 lead. Zink followed, plating Small with a double down the left-field line, giving the Spiders a 5-1 advantage.
Richmond added a run in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI double from Tyler Beckwith, giving the Spiders their winning margin of 6-1.
The Richmond Spiders will continue their series with the Temple Owls on Saturday at Pitt Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
