UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
The Richmond women's basketball team recently participated in Ginter Park Elementary Field Day through its Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program. The Spiders were featured in last month's Richmond-Times Dispatch detailing its involvement with the organization.
Each week, various members of the women's basketball team visit Ginter Park to spend quality time with their little sister or little brother, usually of second or third grade age.
Assistant coach Ebony Tanner Moore spearheaded the effort because she wanted the players to realize they're role models and the importance of giving back.
"Although the program is set up to help the "littles", its us, the "bigs", that have really grown to love these kids," said rising junior Rachael Bilney. "We are just as excited to see them as they are to see us."
Even though the school year is coming to a close, the Spiders plan to continue this program next year.
Richmond finished the 2009-10 season with its second straight postseason appearance. The Spiders only lose one starter from last year's squad, and welcome seven newcomers next week to campus.
