UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond went on a 10-0 run to get within 55-50 with seven minutes left, but Virginia prevailed, 69-56, Sunday afternoon at the Robins Center.
The Cavaliers took their largest lead, 55-40, at the 10:33 mark but a feisty Richmond squad stayed around and started to chip away at the lead. The run was jumpstarted Abby Oliver's steal and two free throws.
Chelsea Shine stopped the Richmond scoring spree with a layup in the lane with 5:52 remaining. The Spiders would get within five once more, but it would not be enough.
Senior guard Oliver did not disappoint the raucous crowd, pouring in a game-high 23 points and dishing a career-high six assists. Double-double machine Genevieve Okoro nearly missed her third opportunity for repeat performance with 11 points and nine boards. Rachael Bilney followed with seven points.
The Spiders outrebounded Virginia, 38-32, and dished a game-high 15 assists. Richmond was held to a season-low 19 field goals and 37 percent shooting from the field.
Richmond fell to 6-2, while Virginia improved to 7-2. Virginia recorded its first win over the Spiders at the Robins Center since 2005.
The Spiders have a week off for exams and resume play Saturday, Dec. 10 at the Robins Center at noon against UNC-Greensboro.
