WASHINGTON, D.C. -
Seven Spiders scored, with Gabi Wiegand leading the charge with a team-best five goals as Richmond (9-8, 6-1) closed out the regular season with an 18-10 win at GW Friday afternoon.
After a close first half that had the Spiders up 6-4 at the break, Richmond exploded for 12 second-half goals to roll past the Colonials.
Leading the second-half push was Mary Flowers and Danielle Schaevitz's back-to-back unassisted tallies to go ahead 8-4. GW would respond with three unanswered scores to pull to within 8-7 with 20 minutes remaining.
Richmond got an insurance goal from Schaevitz, but the Colonials were there again to respond to cut the deficit to 9-8. Richmond then broke open the game with four consecutive scores to push the lead to 12-8. GW would respond with another goal, but the Spiders scored the game's last four goals to put the game out of reach.
Wiegand closed out her stellar day with five scores, two assists for a team-high seven points. Flowers had a hat trick, as did Schaevitz.
Richmond outshot the Colonials, 35-23, and won the ground ball battle 21-18.
The Spiders secured a spot in the 2011 A-10 Tournament last week, and will await seeding and game times which will be announced Monday.
