NORFOLK, Va. -- Richmond toppled in-state foe, ODU, 19-12, Wednesday afternoon in Norfolk, Va.
ODU started the game scoring the first three goals, but Richmond responded with six-straight scores to take the 6-3 lead with 11:43 remaining in the first frame. Four different Spiders notched goals in that span. ODU added two more goals, but Richmond countered with a tally of its own to take the 7-5 lead at the break.
Richmond scored the first two goals of the second half, by way of Caitlin Fifield and Claire Yackery. Fifield ended her spectacular day with a game-high five goals. ODU scored to cut the deficit to 10-7 with 20 minutes remaining in the game, but the Spiders responded by putting the game out of reach with six consecutive scores to take a commanding 16-7 lead. The Monarchs could not recover.
Fifield scored five goals and dished one assist to record a six-point day for Richmond. Sam Stevenson impressed with four goals and one assist, while Kara Moschetti, Emily Doyle and Claire Yackery all added two goals. Four other Spiders scored one goal apiece, as Richmond notched a season-high 19 goals in the win.
Six Spiders recorded helpers, with Doyle leading the pack at three assists. Richmond won the draw, 19-13 and outshot the Monarchs, 35-34. Victoria Roebuck recorded 14 saves between the pipes as Richmond won its second-straight.
The Spiders travel to No. 13 James Madison Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. game.
