Editor's Note: Cross country freshman and Richmond native Taylor Clevinger will share her thoughts and experiences in an ongoing blog that offers readers an inside look into life as a Spider on the course, in the classroom and around campus. Below is her second entry of the season.
WOW! It's my first week of college and we experienced a 5.8 earthquake, Hurricane Irene and several earthquake aftershocks. Needless to say, these made for a pretty exciting first week!
Throughout all of the chaos, however, we had a lot of fun experiencing all of the natural disasters together. On the evening of the hurricane, all of the girls in our dorm waited in the lobby for the first delivery guy to pull up with food. We had a good time going crazy together!
The morning of the hurricane, we went running on a couple trails down by the James River. The trails are awesome and even more exciting when there's a hurricane coming. One of my favorite things to do after a long run like this is to go to the Dining Hall right afterwards and eat whatever you want, even a waffle with a Spider printed in the middle. This is especially true since we knew Irene was on her way and we knew we wouldn't get food for a while. It's great to be a runner!
As far as the team goes, we are getting stronger and stronger every day at practice and pushing ourselves to be the best that we can be. This all feeds into the team and individual goals we have in mind for the season.
We've had some really great workouts over the past week at Roslyn, which is a very hilly cross country course in Richmond - you know it's hilly when they name the hills and one is called Jacob's Ladder - and Bandy Park right near UR. We have also started hitting the weight room and lifting a couple days a week, which will definitely come in handy pumping up the hills in cross country.
I'm starting to get into a routine now and becoming accustomed to the college life. It's so much fun with the team every day at practice, and it's definitely what gets me going in the morning. Way better than coffee! This weekend is our first race, and it's the Spider Alumni Open meet. It sounds like a lot of fun. I can't wait! GO SPIDERS!
