UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond men's soccer opened Atlantic 10 play with a 3-2 setback to Temple on Friday at Robins Stadium. The loss marked the team's fourth one-goal setback of the season.
The Spiders struck first in the seventh minute on the heels of a header by freshman midfielder Sean Baker (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury), who received a feed from classmate Colby Abrahamoff (Davie, Fla./American Heritage School) at the left post and delivered the ball into the far right corner for his first score of the fall.
Sophomore Luis Perez (Pittsboro, N.C./Jordan-Matthews) would extend the Spider advantage to 2-0 in the 33rd minute. The play was set up when freshman Timmy Albright (Richmond, Va./Collegiate School) sent a feed from the left side to Perez, who drilled it past the diving Owl keeper for his third goal of the season.
The Owls would respond right after intermission when senior Tyler Witmer found the back of the net from five yards out in the 49th minute. Sophomore Nolan Hemmer then connected on a pass from sophomore Cody Calafiore at the 58:31 mark to even the score at 2-2.
Calafiore was back at it in the match's closing minutes, slipping a pass from sophomore Dalton Carroll past Spider goalkeeper Thomas Hand (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) into the right corner of the net for what would be the game's golden goal.
Temple outshot Richmond, 20-7, in the match and held a slight 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Hand recorded three saves in net for the Spiders, while Owl goalkeeper Bobby Rosato recorded none on the night.
The Spiders continue conference play on Sunday when they welcome Saint Joseph's to Robins Stadium at 1 p.m. Fans can stay up to date on all the latest Spider men's soccer news right here on RichmondSpiders.com and on the team's Twitter page, @UR_MensSoccer.
