UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond men's soccer team continues conference play this weekend in a road swing to Ohio. The Spiders (2-8-1, 1-1-0 A-10) square off against Xavier on Friday at 7 p.m. before traveling to nearby Dayton to face the Flyers at 1 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
The Spiders went 1-1 in the friendly confines of Robins Stadium to open A-10
play last weekend. Freshman midfielder Sean Baker (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury)
and senior midfielder Jayson Perez (Pittsboro, N.C./Jordan-Matthews) each
scored in a tough 3-2 loss to Temple on Friday before the Spiders bounced back
with a thrilling 3-2 win over Saint Joseph's in double overtime on Sunday.
Baker netted the golden goal to lead the team to the win, while juniors Houston
Oldham (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) and Jonathan Stephenson
(Columbia, Md./Mount Saint Joseph's) also posted goals in the match.
Freshman forward Timmy Albright (Richmond, Va./Collegiate School) and sophomore Spencer Schiff (Clemson, S.C./D.W. Daniel) lead the Spiders with 10 points apiece. Albright paces the squad with four scores, while Schiff has tallied a team-high four assists. Sophomore Luis Perez (Pittsboro, N.C./Jordan-Matthews) and freshman defender Colby Abrahamoff (Davie, Fla./American Heritage School) have each secured six points and rookie goalkeeper Thomas Hand (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) has secured a league-high 65 saves.
SCOUTING THE MUSKETEERS
Xavier (6-2-2, 0-1-1 A-10) dropped
just its second decision of the season in a 1-0 loss to Fordham last Friday.
The Musketeers then bounced back to tally a 2-2 draw with La Salle to wrap up
the weekend.
The Musketeers return seven starters from last year's squad that went 10-7-4 (5-4-0 A-10) last season. Junior forward Luke Spencer leads the team with 12 points on five goals and a pair of assists, while sophomore midfielder Gino Depaoli has posted eight points behind three goals and two helpers. Junior goalkeeper Justin Marshall has played all but 28 minutes in net for the Musketeers, recording 35 saves (.795 save %) and allowing nine goals (0.88 GAA) in 10 matches this season.
Richmond holds a 4-2-2 lead in the all-time series with Xavier. The Spiders tallied a 2-1 victory over the Musketeers in their last meeting in 2009.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton (1-11-0, 0-2-0) has now dropped
eight-straight matches after opening A-10 play with a pair of setbacks at home last
weekend. The Flyers were blanked, 2-0, by La Salle on Friday before being shut
out, 1-0, by Fordham on Sunday.
The Flyers welcome back seven starters from last year's squad that went 7-8-3 (3-4-2). Sophomore midfielder Victor Duru paces the team with five points on a pair of goals and an assist, while freshman midfielder David Abidor and senior defender Jack Pearson have each posted a pair of assists on the fall. Sophomore goalkeeper Alec Storm has secured 41 saves (.661 save percentage) and allowed 21 goals (2.11 GAA) in nearly 900 minutes in net.
The Spiders own a 3-2-2 lead in the all-time series with the Flyers, including a 1-0 win the last time out in 2009.
