UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The William L. Lumpkin Track & Field Leadership Award is presented to a senior undergraduate member of the University of Richmond track & field and cross-country teams based on outstanding academic and athletic performance, and citizenship.

The Lumpkin Leadership Award was established 20 years ago, in 1997, in memory of former Spiders Coach Dr. William L. Lumpkin by University of Richmond alumni on the 1948-49 cross-country team that Lumpkin coached.

The 2017 recipient is Mary Allen, an outstanding university leader and track runner for the Spiders.  The senior from Richmond, Virginia was also awarded the Richmond Athletics 2017 Outstanding Leadership Award earlier this spring as a member of the Black Student-Athlete Summit Group.

Allen is one of Richmond's all-time top track and field performer's currently holding six school records. She persevered through surgery which knocked her out of competition her junior year. At this winter's 2017 Atlantic 10 Conference Championships she returned as one of the top A10 sprinters winning the 200M Championship title, placing 3rd in the 400M and 8th in the 60M.

She has served her coaches and teammates as team captain of the women's track & field team during his career.  Additionally, while a member of the Spiders track & field and cross country teams she helped them earn USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors each of her four years extending the streak to 15 consecutive years the Spiders have received this designation.

“I've been privileged to work with many outstanding student-athletes and Mary ranks as one of the best”, said Director of Track & Field Lori Taylor.  “She joins a long list of exceptional student-athletes to be recognized with this honor.  During her career she has been a great competitor for our program and her achievements outside of athletics are outstanding. She and has helped boost this program through her performances and efforts both as an athlete, leader and as an individual.  Her great work ethic is evident during practice and has enabled her to excel, even after surgery.  We wish her luck as she moves into a new career and a new chapter of her life.”
