SPARTANBURG, S.C. – When your defense boast the country’s fewest goals allowed, it’s tough to pick out just one standout player.
Holding an All-American candidate and one of the top players in the country to one shot makes it a little easier and that’s exactly what senior Ryan Dennis did in Monday’s defeat of the defending national champions UNC.
For his outstanding performance, Dennis was named SoCon Defensive Player of the Week, the first such accolade of his career.
"Ryan had an outstanding week helping lead us to two big wins. He is extremely smart and has great instincts, which allows him to always be one step ahead," Defensive Coordinator Paul Richards said. "Not only can he defend 1v1 against the best, but he is such a great team defender and allows us to have success as a defensive unit."
In Richmond’s two wins this past week, Dennis racked up seven caused turnovers and four grounds balls.
Against UNC on Monday, Dennis was charged with guarding All-American Luke Goldstock, who was limited to just one shot on the night.
On the year, he has 17 caused turnovers, which puts him in the top-five nationally in that category.
Dennis and the Spiders return to SoCon play this weekend when they travel to Jacksonville on Saturday morning. Faceoff is set for 11 a.m.
