UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – For the second time this season, a University of Richmond women’s lacrosse rookie has earned an Atlantic 10 weekly honor.
This time, it’s goalie Megan Gianforte, who was named the conference’s Defensive Player of the Week for her performance in the Spiders’ two games this past week.
The Brielle, N.J., native becomes the first Spider since 2014 to earn the league’s defensive weekly honor after averaging just 6.5 goals allowed in Richmond’s wins over Old Dominion and American.
Gianforte started the week with an eight-save performance in the Spiders’ 11-8 defeat of the Lady Monarchs, while also collecting three ground balls and causing a team-high three turnovers.
She then logged eight saves again, this time against American on Saturday, while only allowing five Eagle goals and collecting another four ground balls in the 15-5 winning effort.
Gianforte has had a standout freshman campaign, leading the Spiders to a 3-1 record and allowing 8.75 goals per game while stopping 40 shots thus far. She also leads the team in both groundballs (14) and caused turnovers (6).
