UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Any time Richmond and James Madison meet on the field, it is a battle. Wednesday afternoon's women's lacrosse game was no different, as the Spiders and Dukes battled it out in frigid temperatures.

Despite a hard fight by the Spiders, the team ultimately fell to the Dukes, 14-8.

The Spiders came out firing on a cold Wednesday afternoon at Robins Stadium. Sophomore Marissa Brown got the fire going as she launched a free-position shot, which sailed past the JMU keeper to put Richmond ahead 1-0, less than two minutes into the game.

JMU answered with a goal of their own a couple of minutes later and took a 2-1 advantage before freshman Sam Geiersbach found the net for her first goal of the game, tying the score at 2-2.

Both teams would exchange goals back and forth before the Dukes closed out the first half scoring two unanswered to take an 8-4 advantage at the break.

Geiersbach notched her fourth goal of the game in the opening minute of the second half as the Spiders began to chip away at JMU’s lead.

The freshman has now tallied four goals in three games this season and it was the second-straight game she was credited with a hat trick.

The Dukes continued to put up a fight as they added a pair of goals to take a 10-5 lead, but Richmond wouldn't go quietly.

With a little over 14 minutes left to play sophomore Mia Castagnero sparked a rally and netted her first goal of the season. Less than a minute later junior Hope D’Orsi followed suit and also registered her first goal of the season as the Spiders chipped away at JMU’s lead, 10-7.

JMU scored four unanswered goals until senior Natalia Chaney broke it up with her 16th goal of the season. However, it wouldn't be enough as JMU secured the 14-8 victory.

Freshman Megan Gianforte finished the game with nine saves in goal for the Spiders.

The Spiders return to action on Sunday, March 19 when they travel down to North Carolina to take on the Campbell Fighting Camels at 2:00 p.m.
