UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Former Spider football standout and Richmond athletics Hall of Famer Leland Melvin has returned safely to earth following a successful 12-day mission aboard the space shuttle Atlantis.

Melvin's 5.3 million-mile trip in space concluded when Atlantis landed at 9:07 a.m. today at Kennedy Space Center, Fla. Melvin was the mission's primary robotic specialist.
