Jim Miller - Director of Athletics
Jim Miller joined the University of Richmond in May of 2000 with a message. The idea is simple; partnering, he says, is the key to the long-term success of Spider athletics. That could not be more true this past year, the Spiders first season all-sports member of the Atlantic 10 conference, as the University achieved unparalleled success. He attributes the department's accomplishments during his first two years to a sense of affiliation that has developed among the University community. Coaches, University administrators, faculty & staff, student-athletes, alumni, and corporate partners have partnered together to accomplish great things again in 2001-2002 year.
Miller is no stranger to creating a successful athletics program. He served nine years as an athletic administrator at North Carolina State University, eventually being named associate director of athletics and chief operating officer. In addition to supervising N.C. State's $24 million athletic budget, Miller oversaw the football and basketball programs. At N.C. State, Miller helped increase the athletic department's operating revenues by 40 percent during his last four years. He assisted with a $50 million capital campaign and helped create a marketing partnership that now produces more than $ 4.3 million in corporate revenue annually. Miller has been actively involved in the competitive, managerial, and financial aspects of collegiate sports for more than 30 years. He played basketball and baseball at Old Dominion University and served as a graduate assistant basketball coach during the 1974 national championship season for the Monarchs. He went on to coach basketball at Eastern Academy in Norfolk (1975-76) and at Southampton Academy in Courtland (1976-78) before taking an assistant coaching duties at Northwestern State and Virginia Military Institute. He received a master of science degree in education from Old Dominion, then earned a law degree at the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William & Mary. Miller worked in a Norfolk law firm before becoming president of Sports Management Services-a sports marketing firm in Virginia Beach-from 1988 until he joined N.C. State. Miller and his wife, Celia and their 16-year old daughter, Gray live only moments away from the Richmond campus. |
