June 16, 2008
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - University of Richmond senior Jonathan Molz has been named the 2008 recipient of the The William L. Lumpkin Track & Field Leadership Award. The award is presented annually to a senior undergraduate member of the Spiders' track & field team based on outstanding academic and athletic performance, and citizenship. The Lumpkin Leadership Award was established in 1997 in memory of former Richmond coach Dr. William L. Lumpkin by University of Richmond alumni on the 1948-49 cross country team that Lumpkin coached. The 2008 recipient, Molz has become an outstanding distance runner for the Spiders. He was crowned the Atlantic 10 Conference Champion in the 1,000m and Distance Medley Relay during his career. As a senior the East Northport, N.Y. native qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships in the 3,000m steeplechase when he ran 9:04.76 to place third in the college division at the prestigious Penn Relays in Philadelphia. This fall he placed third at the A-10 Cross Country Championships leading his Spider team to a second-place team finish, their highest men's finish since joining the league in 2001. Along with outstanding athletic achievement, Molz has excelled in the classroom. He graduates with high marks in psychology and has earned A-10 Academic All-Conference honors multiple times. He has served his coaches and teammates as team captain of the men's cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field teams both his junior and senior years. Additionally, while a member of the Spiders cross country and track & field teams he helped them earn NCAA All-Academic Team honors each of his four years. "Jon joins an elite group of young men and women to receive this award", said men's track & field head coach Steve Taylor. "His guidance of the younger athletes has been critical to our success. He has repeatedly shown that he cares for the team and has helped boost this program through his performances and efforts both as an athlete, leader and as an individual. He has brought an exceptional work ethic with him to practice every day and that has enabled him to excel.
"Looking back over his four years I don't recall him ever missing a run or practice. Jon has listened and learned from our staff and never placed limits on himself. We wish him luck as he moves into a new chapter and starts graduate school. He is one of the best and we are looking forward to him joining our staff next fall." Former William L.
