RICHMOND - On Monday, junior Matt Llano will do something no Richmond runner has done in 29 years when he competes at the NCAA Cross Country National Championship in Terre Haute, Ind. Thanks to his seventh-place finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional, Llano earned the honor of representing the Spiders at the meet, which is live on CBS College Sports Network.

Indiana State University will host the Championships, November 24, at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course located at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in Terre Haute. The women's race begins at approximately 12:05 p.m. ET, followed by the men's race at 12:48 p.m. Both championship races will be broadcast live on CBS College Sports Network and streamed online via NCAA.com.

Stay tuned to RichmondSpiders.com throughout the weekend as Llano will blog from the Championship, beginning Friday evening.

A two-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference selection, Llano was the runner-up at the 2008 A-10 Championship and posted a seventh-place finish two weeks later at the NCAA Southeast Regional. In addition to the athletic honors, Llano was recently selected as the A-10 Men's Cross Country Student-Athlete of the Year.

"This has been a goal of mine for a long time," said Llano. "And I'm really excited for the opportunity to represent Richmond at the meet. I think it's a sign that we're starting to take the program to the next level and the next step is to get the entire team to the National Championship."

The Arnold, Md. native is one of 38 individual qualifiers to the Men's National Championship race, in addition to the 31 teams that earned a berth. Llano is one of just four men's runners from the Atlantic 10, including brothers Matt and Chris Lemon from Dayton and Kyle Murray from Saint Joseph's.

The top-40 runners in the meet earn All-American distinction.

All time, only three previous Spiders have qualified for the NCAA National Championship meet, including former Olympians Hillary Tuwei and Sosthenes Bitok. Tuwei and Bitok were the most recent, each earning All-America honors at the 1979 Championship in Lehigh, Pa. Tuwei went three-consecutive times from 1977 to 1979, while Fred Guest was the first-ever Spider to qualify in 1972.
