The senior is the president of the University's Student-Athlete Advisory Council and is the Atlantic 10's national student-athlete representative to the NCAA. 2008 (Senior): Appeared in Richmond's opener, but missed the remainder of the season with an arm injury and received a medical redshirt... Named to the preseason "watch list" for the Brooks Wallace National Player of the Year Award... Was a Second Team All-Atlantic 10 selection as a relief pitcher ... One of the A-10's most dominate closers all season ... Set Richmond single-season records and led the A-10 in both appearances (36) and saves (14) ... The 14 saves was the fifth-most in the NCAA ... He fanned 62 against 24 walks for a team-leading ratio of +2.58 ... Blew just one save all season and was called on for two saves in a series twice - against Rhode Island and Temple - and converted all four ... He fanned seven in just 3.2 innings of work to pick up a victory over Delaware ... Owned an ERA of 4.77 for the season, but 3.76 over his last 34 outings. 2006 (Sophomore): Made 27 appearances, including one start for the Spiders... His 27 appearances rank third on the Richmond single-season record list... Finished with an 8.85 ERA over 39.2 inning of work... Garnered four saves in six chances. 2005 (Freshman): Led the Spiders in wins with seven and a record of 7-6... Appeared in a team-high 21 games, making 10 starts... Worked one complete game and was part of one combined shutout... Finished the season with an ERA of 6.15 in 74.2 innings... Gave up 60 runs on 86 hits and 33 walks... Struck out 61 and limited opponents to a .290 average... Named Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week, Feb. 21... Earned two A-10 Rookie of the Week honors, Feb. 21 and April 4.
High School and Personal: Was a four-year letterwinner in baseball and basketball at Chaminade High School... Awarded the Frank "Boiler" Burns Award as one of the most outstanding student-athletes in his senior class of 400... Served as captain of the baseball and basketball teams his senior year... Was an All-Long Island selection following his junior year... Hit .429, including 29 RBI in an 18 game span his junior season... Finished his career at Chaminade with a mark of 22-4 on the mound... Son of Manny and Mary Alas... Father played baseball at Villanova. |
