Baseball Clinches Season-Opener Against the Citadel

Feb. 20, 2004

Final Stats

University of Richmond junior Jim Fasano (Horsham, Pa.) crushed a home run over the right-field wall in the first inning, on his first pitch of the 2004 season, as the Spiders defeated the Citadel, 2-1, in their season opener and second game of the Charleston Crab House Shootout, this evening.

The game remained 1-0 until the eighth inning, as it was a battle of the pitchers. Richmond's Derek Duclos (Exton, Pa.) hurled 86 pitches in eight innings of action and the Citadel's Jonathan Ellis threw 90 pitches in five innings. The teams allowed only five hits a piece.

In the top of the eighth, Spiders' senior Bryan Pritz (Wilmette, Ill.) doubled into left field. Sophomore Ben Zeskind (Miami, Fla.) followed with a single to left field, moving Pritz to third. With one out, Fasano grounded out to first base, allowing Pritz to score and give the Spiders the 2-0 lead.

The Bulldogs threatened in the bottom of the eighth when junior Jon Aughey scored off Josh Stackley's double to center field with one out, to make the score 2-1. The Spiders were able to fight back and close out the inning with the bases loaded.

John Cronin (Branford, Conn.) replaced Duclos in the ninth inning to close out the game.

Freshman Josh Farkes (Boston, Mass.) tallied his first hit of his college career in the fourth inning on a single to right field.

The Bulldogs offense was lead by Stackley and junior Will Coker, both with two hits apiece.

The Spiders are back in action for their second game of the Citadel tournament, when they face Old Dominion tommorrow at 11 a.m.
