No. 10 Baseball Squeezes Past VMI, 9-8

March 5, 2003

Box Score

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Sophomore first baseman Jim Fasano (Horsham, Pa.) blasted a deep left field homer in the bottom of the eighth to lead the Spiders 9-8 over VMI. Junior second baseman Bobby LeNoir (Wilmington, Del.) solidified the win with a line drive catch in the ninth with Keydets on first and third. Richmond improves to 6-1, while VMI falls to 2-7.

The high scoring battle between the teams began in the first when LeNoir plated on a senior Michael Galligan fielder's choice.

In the third, Richmond tied the Keydets on junior catcher Adam Tidball's (Bethesda, Md.) single up the middle. Tidball drove in designated hitter senior Vito Chiaravalloti (Middletown, N.J.).

The Spiders and Keydets continued the seesaw, with Richmond tallying runs in the fourth and fifth. LeNoir crossed home for the second time, while teammates Galligan, Tidball, and centerfielder A.J. Board (Raleigh, N.C.) touched home for the first time.

Richmond sealed the victory in the bottom of the eighth with Fasano's three-run homer. LeNoir would provide the defense ending play on VMI's line drive.

Senior reliever Andy Givens (Bel Air, Md.) earned the win improving to 2-0. Freshman Brad Loveless (Ellicott City, Md.) collected his first collegiate start on the afternoon, fanning four in 4.1 innings. Middle relievers John Cronin (Branford, Conn.) and Nate Kuchta (Victor, N.Y.) posted a strike out while on the mound.

VMI's J.J. Hollenbeck (0-2) took the loss. Keydets designated hitter, Brandon Massenburg launched the only other home run of the afternoon.

Richmond takes two days off before returning to Pitt Field to host the Tigers of Princeton. Both Saturday, March 8 and Sunday, March 9 are doubleheaders starting at 11:00 a.m.
