Sever's Gem Helps Saint Louis Sweep Richmond
April 4, 2009
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - A complete-game shutout by Saint Louis' Dave Sever dealt the Richmond baseball team a 4-0 defeat in the series finale Saturday afternoon in St. Louis, Mo. The Spiders were limited to just six hits by Sever as the Billikens earned the three-game sweep. Sever went the distance and fanned 11 Spiders, walked five and allowed just six hits to improve his record to 3-2. With the sweep, SLU improved to 17-13 overall, 5-3 in the A-10, while Richmond dropped to 13-12, 3-6 with its seventh-straight loss. Richmond sophomore starter Anthony Cafagna held the Billikens scoreless through four innings, before SLU broke through with three in the fifth. The first two batters of the inning reached on singles, and after a sacrifice bunt moved both into scoring position, J.D. Dunn cleared the bases with his double to center field. Cody Cotter's single in the next at bat knocked Cafagna out of the game, but that would be all the offense the Billikens needed. Senior RF Ryan Metzroth, who gunned down Dunn at the plate from right field in the fifth inning, stayed hot with two of Richmond's six hits. He collected five hits in the series to boost his average to .327. The Spiders return to action Wednesday night at sixth-ranked North Carolina. First pitch at Boshamer Stadium is set for 6 p.m.
