PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Richmond and La Salle combined to commit 11 errors, while three Explorer pitcher scattered nine singles off Spider bats to take the first of a three-game series, 4-2, Friday at Hank DeVincent Field. Sophomore Alex Hale will go for the Spiders Saturday in game two against La Salle. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.

Richmond took the first lead of the game in the second after freshman Cameron Brown reached on the first of five Explorer errors A perfect hit-and-run by junior Vince Riggi put runners at first and third with no outs, allowing sophomore Hank Coogan to drive in Brown with another groundball error.

La Salle rallied to take the lead ,2-1, in the bottom half of the inning on four Spider errors and just one hit -- a double to centerfield.

Richmond went on to strand seven combined from the third to eighth innings. La Salle drove in another run in the fifth and its final run of the game in the sixth. Both runs came via doubles, one to centerfield and the other to right-center.

Senior Ja Jones ended his day after six innings of work. The Brunswick, Ga., native allowed four runs (three earned), scattering five hits and one walk, while fanning four. Junior Benji Marshall came on in the seventh with no outs and runner at third. He forced a fielder's choice to get the runner at third, then got a comeback double-play to get out of the inning.

Marshall came back out in the eighth and allowed just one hit. The Gaithersburg, Md., native ended his day by going two innings, allowing one hit and striking out one.

The Spiders loaded the bases with two outs in the top half of the ninth, but La Salle's Gerard Breslin got Riggi to strikeout and end the game stranding three.

 

 

Richmond and La Salle will play game two of the series, Saturday, May 6 at 1 p.m. Sophomore Alex Hale will get the call for the Spiders, and face La Salle's Dan Waters.

Game Notes
-- The loss snaps Richmond's 12-game win streak against La Salle in the all-time series.
-- Richmond outhit the Explorers 9-6.
-- Senior Ben Zeskind is now 18 hits away from setting the Spiders' career hit record.
-- The Spiders' six errors are a season-high miscues.
-- La Salle's five miscues were one shy of an opponent high for the season. Princeton committed six errors, May 12, at Pitt Field.
