Richmond Baseball Digs Out Of Snow To Host Seton Hall This Weekend
March 6, 2009
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- Off to its best start since the 2002 NCAA Super Regional season, the Richmond baseball team opens a season-long, 12-game homestand Sunday versus Seton Hall at Pitt Field. The Spiders (7-0) enter the weekend as one of just 11 undefeated teams in Division-I baseball. WEEKEND LIVE LINKS | GAMETRACKER | GAMETRACKERQUICK HITTERS Since Richmond's Feb. 28th win over Iona, the final game of the Iona series was cancelled for rain, Tuesday's game at William & Mary was called off for snow and the Friday and Saturday games versus Seton Hall have been postponed due to field conditions. The Spiders are a spotless 7-0 and off to their best start since going 10-0 to open the 2002 campaign, which ended in an A-10 West Division Championship and the school's first appearance in the NCAA Super Regional. Richmond started the 2003 campaign 5-0 en route to the A-10 Championship crown and a berth in the NCAA Regional. Freshman 2B/SS Adam McConnell (pictured) was tabbed the A-10 Rookie of the Week this week after batting .476 (10-for-21) and scoring 10 runs in four wins last week for the Spiders. McConnell also swiped four bases and played error-free baseball in 19 chances in the middle infield. McConnell's honor marked the second-consecutive weekly award for the Spiders, after senior RF Ryan Metzroth was tabbed both the A-10 Player of the Week and the Northeast Regional Player of the Week last week from collegebaseballinsider.com. The 27 runs scored in Game One of the Iona series was one shy of the school-record 28 scored in a win (28-5) over George Washington in 1996. Richmond has won seven-consecutive games to open 2009, marking the team's longest winning streak since winning eight-straight during the 2007 campaign. The Spiders also won six-straight midway through last season. The school record of 14-straight wins came during the 1935 season. Running at an eye-popping rate, the Spiders have already swiped 22 bases (in 287 attempts) this season and are on pace to obliterate the school record for single-season steals of 116 (2003). At this pace, the Spiders will swipe 150+ bags in 2009.
