NORFOLK, Va. - The Richmond men's basketball team fell behind by 17 in a sluggish first half, but came all the way back to within three in a 65-62 loss to Old Dominion on Wednesday night.

In the first half the Spiders were outscored 30-6 in the paint and gave up 12-second chance points in trailing by as many as 17. Richmond (4-3) came out playing harder in the second half, only giving up 17 points in the paint and four second-chance points on their way to cutting the deficit to three.

Sophomore Kevin Anderson had a three-pointer to tie with 10 seconds left, but it was off the mark and junior David Gonzalvez had a half-court heave at the buzzer that would have forced overtime.

Gonzalvez finished with a game-high 20 points, making 8-of-12 field goals and 4-of-5 three-pointers. He grabbed nine rebounds and had three assists. Anderson scored 17 points and sophomore Justin Harper had 10 points.

Keyon Carter had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds for Old Dominion (2-3). Gerald Lee had 12 points and six boards, while Darius James had 11 points.

The Spiders were up 14-11 on a layup by Gonzalvez with 12:47 to play in the first half, but Old Dominion scored 13 unanswered points in the next 3:49 to open up a 10-point lead.

After a three-pointer by Giddings cut the gap to 24-17, the Monarchs went on 6-0 run to push the lead to 13 and had the lead up to 17 points thanks to what was a 25-5 run over 10 minutes.

The Spiders cut the lead to single digits in the first six minutes of the second half , but Old Dominion was able to keep the margin in double-figures for most of the second session.

Richmond really came alive in the final seven minutes, cutting the lead to four with 4:39 to play.

In the final three minutes, Harper had two buckets waved off for controversial offensive fouls.

Richmond returns to action on Saturday against Delaware at 7 p.m.
