Men's Basketball Announces Two Promotions; Thomas Rejoins The Spiders
Sept. 26, 2008
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Men's basketball head coach Chris Mooney announced the promotions of Kevin McGeehan to associate head coach, Rob Jones to assistant coach and the addition of 2007 Richmond graduate Peter Thomas as director of basketball operations. McGeehan has been an assistant coach under Mooney for the past four years, joining him for one season at Air Force (2004-05) and serving on the staff at Richmond for the past three seasons. He has been instrumental in the Spiders turnaround under Mooney, including the fourth-place Atlantic 10 finish last season. "Kevin has been an integral part of the resurgence of Spider Basketball," Mooney said. "His recruiting efforts and basketball knowledge have greatly impacted our program. Our players and staff are excited for his promotion."
The Maple Glen, Pa. native was the head coach at Springfield High in Erdenheim, Pa., before joining Mooney at Air Force. McGeehan has been with Mooney on every stop in his coaching career, at Landsdale Catholic, Beaver College, Air Force and Richmond. McGeehan was the head coach at Beaver College for two years, before joining Mooney at Air Force. Jones has been the director of basketball operations for the past three seasons, after serving as an assistant coach at Alabama-Huntsville for the 2004-05 season. The Jefferson City, Mo. native helped Alabama-Huntsville to a 16-12 record and third-place finish in the Gulf South Conference East Division. Jones was responsible for scouting, film breakdown, perimeter player development and on-court coaching. "Rob has served Richmond Basketball exceptionally well for the past three years," Mooney said. "I look forward to working with him in his new role as assistant coach. Rob's understanding of the game and his ability to communicate will be very valuable to us."
In his three years at Richmond, Jones has been responsible for the day-to-day operations of the basketball office, film breakdown, team travel and organizing the recruiting database. He was a standout at Toccoa Falls College in Georgia, earning All-South Region honors. "It is an honor to be promoted to assistant coach and continuing to serve as a member of the Richmond basketball staff," Jones said. "Spider basketball has a rich tradition and a bright future and I look forward to contributing to the growing success of an exciting team of talented young players." Thomas returns to his alma mater after one year on the staff at Eastern Kentucky. The 2007 Richmond graduate started as the operations assistant and was promoted to director of basketball operations. He handled the recruiting database, coordinated recruiting and team travel, was the academic coordinator and ran the summer basketball camps. "I am so happy to welcome Peter back to the Richmond Basketball family," Mooney said. "Peter demonstrated his work ethic and commitment to Richmond as a player and captain, and now will assist us as we continue to make strides as a program." The Little Rock, Arkansas native came to Richmond as a walk-on in 2003, but played in 106 games during his four-year career, earning a scholarship in his junior year and starting his final 60 games. He shot 48 percent from the field for his career with 424 career points. "Coming back to be a part of Spider Basketball at the University of Richmond is exciting for me in many ways," Thomas said. "Not only am I coming back to a place I love, but I am coming back to work in a program that I already know is surrounded by great people."
Jeff Gray, a 2008 graduate of Massachusetts, also joins the Spiders as a graduate assistant.
